Finally have my trailer |
Lead | |
|
Well I finally purchased and received my custom trailer last week, It is chopped 12" so it is only 5'6" on the inside but it fits under my
carport and is easier to tow. It is steel framed not aluminum. It is insulated but only with that silver foil and bubble wrap insulation so R value is probably
only R2 or R3. It has a sheet metal liner under the floor so the mice can not chew through the floor. Sorry for the dark picture it was taken at night.

John & Brad;
I just got the trailer a week ago so I am just finding things out like that my Avalanche drops a foot when the trailer is attached. Sure makes it easier accessing the side storage compartments when the trailer is attached. Before I had to stand on my tip toes to see inside the compartments, now its no problem. I also thought the Avalanche was all set up for towing because it has the towing package. Then I found out I have to get an electric brake controller, it is wired for one but GM never installed it. I will also probably have to get an equalizer hitch so it rides more level. Hey Brad how much in dollars is an equalizer hitch? Does the brand of hitch matter or are the all about the same? And John, Yes, it is winter storage for the Corvette. Peace in the family again!

Vern,
I have a spare brake controller here for cheap if you want one. it is a couple years old but only used for about 3 months in my 94 f150. My dually came with one so I did not need it and my new truck had one built in. John

John;
OK I am kind of dumb when it comes to electric brake controllers. Will your spare controller work in my Avalanche? The Avalanche manual says the wiring harness for the controller has four wires: Dark Blue =Auxiliary; Red/Black = Battery; Light Blue = Brake Switch; and white =Ground. Does an electric brake controller work for any weight of trailer or is it certain size of controller for certain trailer weight? I am up in Edmonton this weekend (7,8 & 9 Nov) so if it works I am interested in buying it. I know you don't have the answer but why would your Ford F-150 truck come with a controller but not my Avalanche considering my Avalanche has the trailer towing package?

Hey Vern
John's truck came with a brake control because Ford offered that as an option on their super duty trucks, and I think Ford is the only truck to offer this. The Avalanche has the tow package meaning all the wiring is in place - under the dash you will find a plug that a brake control will plug right into (with the proper harness - any RV place has them for about 20$ http://www.tekonsha.com/product/details.asp?ProdID=3015-P ) pretty much all brake controls will work for all weights of trailer - they work on an inertia system that senses the deceleration of the truck/trailer so weight is not an issue.When you step on the brake pedal they start putting out power to the trailer brakes proportionate to the speed that you are slowing down. check this site for some good info on brake controls http://www.etrailer.com/faq-brakecontroller.aspx As for equalizer hitches there are lots and lots and lots of different brands out there. I recommend you stay with a name brand (Reese or Eaz-Lift) and believe it or not you have lots of options when it comes to EQ hitches as well. (Stuff like built in sway control etc.) We sell Reese hitches here. Expect to pay between $230.00 - $650.00 for a hitch. You need to figure out the approx tongue weight of the trailer to get the appropriate hitch. ( tongue weight is usually 10% of the total trailer weight when loaded) another good page for information on EQ hitches - and check out the videos at the bottom of the page for some hands on explaining. http://www.etrailer.com/faq-weightdistribution.aspx Hope all if this helps! if you have any more questions ask away - I have been selling this kind of stuff for 15 years of so Brad Fedoruk - 1994 Thunderbird SC 5-Speed President of the SuperCoupe Club of Western Canada

Vern,
it will work on your truck you just need the harness and it just plugs in under the dash. Did you find a harness in your glovebox when you bought the truck? I know on the older fords you needed to also put some relays in. My buddy grants truck has used this one before when we were testing his trailer brakes as he thought his controller was not working. Turned out to be a bad connection. I will be around on the weekend but I have moved into sherwood park now. give me a call at 780 410-0981. John

Trailer hitches and brake controllers | ||
|
Brad;
Wow, so much to read, so much to learn. Thanks for the info now I just have to absorb it all. I sure didn't want to pay $650for a hitch so I hope I can use the cheaper ones. The trailer is rated for 7000lbs GVWR. Trailer weighs 3300 lbs empty. Trailer and Corvette should weigh in at 6450 lbs (3300 lbs + 3150 Lbs). Trailer and T-Bird should weigh in at 7100 lbs (3300 lbs + 3800 lbs). John; I didn't find any wire harness anywhere that I can remember. Owners manual doesn't mention a wire harness being supplied. It says "Instrument panel contains blunt cut wires near the data link connector for the trailer brake controller". So to me it sounds there is not even wire connectors but cut off wires that I have to splice to the trailer brake controller or splice into a wire harness so the trailer brake controller can then be plugged in. I will give you a call this weekend.
