Back from the exhaust shop..... |

Well i picked up my 94 today at Alta custom exhaust in Edmonton and am very happy with the exhaust they built for the car. It's not mandrel nor does it
have cats but it is a true dual 2.5" system and has an x-pipe and polished magna flow mufflers. They have nice turndowns but unfortunately i didn't
take a pic of them but these pics are of the car on the hoist when i picked it up today. It cost way to much so don't bother asking but they did a good
job. The car sounds great, nice and quiet at idle with a low grumble with the cam. I will have to see what its like after driving it for a while.

Looks pretty sweet. How does it sound on the highway? Any drone?

I haven't taken it out for a highway run yet, but i am expecting some, although with the 3.73's it should keep the revs above the dreaded drone zone...
I am hoping that running the duals and x-pipe will help but if it is to bad i will get some resonators or even high flow cats if i can get a deal.

Looks good, I would of requested like flanges right before or after the X-pipe.. or a slip joint with Exhuast Band clamps, just for ease of RE&RE
Also take it they are the straight through Magnaflows?? If so, yah give them some time, they do change tones as they `break in' noticed it all the time at work.. And tell me about it not being cheap.. I wanted just a Stock style replacement, with me suppling everything but pipe and hangers, and on average most shops wanted nearly $1000 to do it.. like WTF?!?! I've been debating doing it myself.. Yah it may take longer to do, but it shure the hell wouldn't cost that much..

I was going to have the system seperate there but the more i wanted the more expensive it got so i just went for it like this. Here is a pic of the back end of
the car, nice subtle non ricer style tips..

Yep those tips are good.. it's what i like to try and do on my '89 (maybe T-bird?? ) like things hidden
Heh yah tell me about it.. i asked for my '89 `What if you installed a Ball and socket just after the resonator for ease of removal??' one shop weirdly had no idea what i was talking about.. the other claimed it would add ALOT more to the price.. (why? I amit it's been awhile since i researched the price of them, but a 3" Ball and socket was like $50-60?? ) Never mind not being able to add 2.25" pipe to the stock exhuast Manifolds.. (which other have done? Also wonder how the Down pipes from SCP are done?? ) I can get the pipe rather cheaply.. the Mandrel Bends aren't THAT badly priced.. So.. it shouldn't be THAT bad to do, and i SHOULD be able to do better then THIS!!!!

After this, i really think it is worthwhile to invest in a mig and start to practice welding up exhaust. I have a good friend who is a welder and was going to
get him to do it for me but he is so busy and makes big bucks at his job so i didn't bother him. As long as i could do better welds than that o2 bung! Man
thats brutal!

You can buy premade exhausts of SCP and Spinningwheels SC. All you'd have to do is put it up and clamp it together. May be an option if you don't like
paying for a shop to do it.

I know i was considering there 2.5" system, but after shipping and brokerage fee's plus there 750.00 i decided to get it done local.. Plus it is not a
complete kit, it only goes to the trans crossmember so you would still have to do some welding. The exhaust cost 1400.00 all in, it was 300.00 more than the
original over the phone quote i got from them. I really hated to spend that much on exhaust but there is two factors involved, one the limited availability of
a good system and the other is the economy here is so overheated it is very difficult to get any type of deal here, every shop for anything is so busy.

heh the SCP system is still $1100 if you want Cats (which is needed here, minus $130 with out)) and that's not including brokerage fees, Shiping (in itself
won't be cheap), Taxes, duty..
luckily you can have it shipped Freight (if SCP allows it) to save some $ since most Carriers will charge an arm and a leg because of weight and size of the package (yes the `cat back' system does break down, but still ain't small).. then add in the weight.. so MAYBE another $200 to ship it? All and all a custom done`True dual' setup for low $1100-1400 isn't THAT bad, specially on one of these cars.. that price for a Recreation just in larger pipe of the stock setup is just Ridiculous..

Yea i suppose so but then again its always not too bad a price when its not your money and way to much when it is. I got a quote to paint the car on friday
from a shop in the same condo's as us and they want almost 4400.00 to paint the car! The car has no rust and just some minor dings and a few scratches,
nothing major at all and they still want that much, time for a paint gun too!!

I'm just saying.. Doing a true duals on one of these cars are pretty time consuming.. and like i said.. i was quoted the same basic price for doing the
stock like setup, With me supplying almost everything (they just do the bend and supplying of the pipe) Hate to know what the want around here to do a true
dual setup....
Heh I was qouted in '97 $6-7000 to repaint my '91.. no color change, no Pearls, just the OE color to `freshen' it up... we are charged at work like @$1000 to paint our cars.. ALL prep work is done, we supply the paint even.. All they do is spend alittle time mixing the paint and like MAYBE 2 hours spraying.. And just to add... Yah think i can afford what you have done to your car?? No f'n way in hell, i can't even afford to refreshen the 5.0L in my '91...

For sure you are right on all the time required to do the dual system. I have tried to keep the costs down on this car as much as possible without sacraficing
quality but it has not been easy. Some things you just can't cheap out on and expect reliability. As far as stock style replacement systems go, this is
about the best deal i have seen.

It is a flowmaster cat back system with the 40 series mufflers, it is 375.00 I have asked the seller before and he was willing to ship to Canada. Looks like it is what you are looking for...

Flowmaster on a 3.8SC just doesn't sound `right' thou.. HECK i do not know if the box of stuff i have will sound right..
Mind you $400 for the piping alone, then add my own mufflers may not be bad.. considering the cost of having someone local bending it up for me.. Just got to do the Y-pipe thing then...

WHAT!! FLowmaster 40's don't sound right????
Didn't you hear that sweet purr coming off the 40's on the new 'bird on the weekend??? Of course given the horrendous drone i had on the Cougar anything would sound good.

I still have the original exhaust from the 94, it is in good shape but it doesn't have cats. If you lived nearby you could just have it.

You did a 5.0 conversion in your SC, what did you need to do it? I was thinking about doing one if I can't find an engine for mine.

people put 5.0's into SC's!
