I looked at the manual I have for the 93-94 but it seems very difficult, in addition to being different than the 91. I need some help on this. Suggestions, tips, anything.

Need Help With Differential |
Lead | |
|
I was under the 'bird on Sunday when changing the shocks and it looks like my clunking is not a universal joint but rather in the differential itself. Now
I'm thinking I need to swap the diff from the Cougar into the 'Bird.
I looked at the manual I have for the 93-94 but it seems very difficult, in addition to being different than the 91. I need some help on this. Suggestions, tips, anything.

are you shure it's not just the bushing (front ones) on the diff itself??

No not sure.
This is uncharted territory for me. How would I check that?

Visually at first.. if the bushing (usually upper) looks like it's a two piece then they are gone... Next would be to use a pry Bar of some sort and see if
you can get the diff to move....

I will check that tomorrow. I don't think that's it though. When I was turning the half shafts by hand they didn't sound all that smooth.

diff swap | ||

Sean,
Swapping the diff is a piece of cake, I did mine in just over two hours. I'm not sure what your manual says but I will run you down how I did it. - pull the passenger side tire and brake assembly off (caliper and bracket 2 bolts) - pull the spindle off (3 bolts) - I popped the axle out of the diff with a large screwdriver. - Disconnect the abs sensors on both sides of the diff, unbolt drive shaft and slide towards trans. - unbolt diff, jack underneath, you can slide the diff off the other axle and out of the car with very little difficulty. - Install is exact opposite, it took a little time for me to get the new diff on the axle and in the correct position, a 2nd set of hands would be very helpful. Make sure the diff doesn't fall on you, mine did and it hurts , their heavy. Give me a call if you have any problems. -Andrew

Well Kevin, to paraphrase the Drill Sergeant in Forrest Gump, "KEVIN, YOU'RE A GODDAMN GENIUS!"
The bushings are shot. I will be changing them out this weekend. Thanks Kevin. I will be pulling the diff out of the Cougar thanks to Andrew's advice, hopefully sometime next week.

the ones in the Cougar are good? Or??
I'm debating about getting a set from SCP (and maybe a few other things For the Bird) Also doesn't matter which side you start with since you have no exhaust in the car now right?? Either way, it's not THAT hard of a thing to do.. And i would just Pull both Uprights, and axles just for ht e easy of Removal.. least then you can just lower the Differential..

I'm going to check the ones in the Cougar No matter what I am going to put them in for sure they are better than what i have now. And since the diff is
already unbolted I ust have to pop them off and slip them onto the T'bird. I'm hoping I can lower the diff enough to get them on without dealing with
the exhaust.
I looked at the ones on SCP and I think I'll buy a set but I will have to wait for a month.

Oh'yah... You can remove the bushings without removing the diff.. a jack under the diff (DUH!) unbolt the front two bolts.. lower the jack abit, push the
bolt UP and the bushings SHOULD come out
